I am a suicide survivor. I am also a "highly-functioning" bipolar (well most of the time!) and founder of Hope Xchange Nonprofit, for bipolars by bipolars. I'm also blessed with an amazing family and genuine friends that have simply keep me alive. But let's face it. Not everyone has the support system I do and not everyone survives.
Regardless of which side of the aisle you sit on, hopefully we can all agree with the cold, hard facts: the U.S. government has abandoned the mentally ill and, as a result, society's 'throw-aways' are now behind bars or on the streets or, at best, socially outcast on disability and shrouded in silence, shame and stigma. Surely, we as a society can do better. Something has to be done and it's up to each one of us to play our part. Mental illness does not discriminate. It affects us all.
